Family

Family is so important and today that is what I'm thankful for...

We are so grateful that both sides of the family get along so well. No real horrible in-law stories. Able to spend holidays and birthdays together is priceless for the kids. We're grateful that we live within a short driving distance of one another.

thankful for talents

What a day! I do it to myself - but I really hate to disappoint my kiddos.

Today I ran errands to get ready for a birthday party we're hosting tomorrow. See this brown-eyed beauty? On Monday she'll be 4. And she wanted a Dora the Explorer party...what was I to do?

So being the overachiever I think I'm supposed to be I ran around Norman today to get the finishing touches that I hope the 5 giddy little girls will enjoy.

Now you're probably wondering why I titled this "thankful for talents". When the theme was picked I did what any overachieving mother would do...I went to Pinterest to see if I could replicate anything. Lo and behold...I found the perfect treat bag. Then I remembered that I don't sew...fortunately though I have a friend that does.

These turned out so cute!!! So this is why I am so grateful for all the many talents of which I am surrounded. I could not have had such a cute take-away gift and I think the girls will love them!

So I thank all of you for the talents you share daily - the ones that are obvious and the not-so-obvious ones. They are gifts from Heavenly Father and I truly appreciate you.

November helps me to remember

Yes it's November?!

I like November. College football is in full swing in November. My daughter was born in November. My mother-in-law was born in November. Scott's sweet cousin Debra was born in November.  The trees still have a bit of fall color left in November. Thanksgiving is in November - and it's because of Thanksgiving that this blog will get a workout in November.

I had a lot of fun reflecting last year so I will update my gratefulness here this month. I won't be posting in any particular order as my top 5 are pretty evenly tied and I don't want one child to feel like I like the other one better so I choose to not post in order. They can fight about which one was my favorite when I'm now longer here!

Today's gratitude post is for my best friend...

Yes  - this was taken a few years ago when we dated. I could've used a more recent photo, but hey nothing says "come read this" like a photo from the 80's! Any way - this man changed my life in sooo many ways. He introduced me to Sooner football, the Avengers, and the Gospel. He's the reason I have 2 beautiful children. He's seen me at my best - as well as at my worst and didn't walk away. He trusts me with everything he has. He's an amazing father. He's kind and compassionate. I hope I've been able to tell him how grateful I am for him!

So if you're into sappy posts - OK not all will be sappy, but a lot will - feel free to check back...

Halloween

My kids really like it more than I do, but even my hubby will tell you I decorate more now than I ever have. Oh the things you do for your kids!

We had quite the day - school parties - church trunk-or-treat and then neighborhood trick-or-treating with friends...
This was the plate of goodies from the school party. Can you tell which goodie I contributed? It may surprise you! :)

Eye of the beholder

Don't you love those people who can take amazing photos? What talent!

Well the other day I looked at the photos on my phone. Please don't expect to see those type of amazing pictures here! The option to be able to take your own photo was great idea! (sarcasm font if there was one) What would we ever do without it? Keep in mind she's 3...

Doesn't she have an amazing eye??

Maybe we eat out too much?! Nah...

Just think of the photos we could have if digital would have been available when we were young? Oh the possibilities...

Note to my former self

Since October is National Bullying Prevention Month; it has caused me to reflect on my tween/teen years. I've always felt fortunate that I had the ability to be in one place for all if my schooling. I have friends that I have literally known since I was 4 years old. I have no doubt that I was bullied as well as being a bully myself. In fact I worry so much about the latter that I have a hard time believing the goodness of my children. {Because I perceive that I was so bad and they are a part of me how are they so good?} They really are nice kids though and that’s not just me talking, that’s others…but I digress.

Anyway so here are a few ideas I wish I either knew or accepted while in my adolescence…

Pay attention in all math classes...I know as I sat there I kept thinking "but when will I really use this?" The real world application comes when you have to help your child (or someone else’s) with their homework. That's how teachers should answer too - more people may pay attention…or not, it would have a least been an answer which would be more than what was said to me when I actually vocalized it.

Let it go - for all the times your boyfriend may be stolen or leaves you - let it go. To borrow a line from "Sixteen Candles" "That's why they call them crushes. If they were easy, they'd call them something else." Let it go - there's something better out there. You just can't see it yet.

Move on - for all those times you think your friend stabbed you in the back - learn from it, but move on. You may not have all the information to make an informed decision. Or they didn’t have all the information to make an informed decision. Either way – move on. Remember to only say something behind someone else’s back you would say to their face.

Don't be in a hurry/Slow down - I  loved my dad. He had this philosophy that he didn't want me to work while I was in high school & when asked about it he told me "you will have your whole life to work". As I reflect on just how right he was I hope I can give this freedom to my kids.

Always have your picture taken – OK this sounds a bit odd and I don’t particularly like my photo taken, but follow me here, I think you’ll get it. In my first life (1989-2002) I was a travel agent. Back in the days when you could go for a very small price. My first trip was to London. To be more specific, 48 hours in London & Bath. I found my pictures recently. Lots of scenery & buildings – not one of me. Only because I’m an honest person do you know I was actually there – if I had been in at least one of them you would have no doubt. Basically I’m saying you need to have your photo taken as proof you were there. Just saying…

Now none of these revelations are earth shattering. They probably won’t change the world, but they seemed thought provoking to me. I do hope I can steer my children through their rough years with fewer tears and torment than I had. I hope I can give them a positive self-image and the desire to do good to everyone.

Oh my...

Oh my has it really been almost a month since I updated this?

Oh well - it's not like so much has been going on...piano lessons, school work, my work, Scott's work, and most recently we're in the middle of Cub Scout Popcorn sales!!!

Yes, it's that time of year when these sweet little boys will be outside stores, in our case Hobby Lobby in Norman, and work to earn their way to scout camp, raingutter regata boats, pinewood derby cars, family camp outs and rockets! So much fun for all!

If you'd like to support Pack 221 from Roosevelt Elementary we'll be at Hobby Lobby in Norman on Saturday, September 22nd from 10:00-2:00.

If you're in Norman/Moore/OKC area, give me a ring and we can get your order.

If you're out of town, have no fear there is a web site in which to order from! http://www.popcornordering.com/Popcornordering/Store/Entry?keycode=8344036425

It's really good popcorn too!
